Good day, Princeton. I can’t say I was disappointed in Super Bowl Sunday. In a stunning turn of events, the Philadelphia Eagles dismantled the Kansas City Chiefs pursuit of a historic three-peat by securing a decisive 40-22 victory in Super Bowl LIX. Quarterback Jalen Hurts delivered an MVP-worthy performance, amassing 221 passing yards, two touchdown passes, and an additional rushing touchdown, showcasing his dual-threat capabilities. The Eagles defense was relentless, forcing two interceptions from Patrick Mahomes, including a pivotal pick-six by rookie Cooper DeJean.

Happy for you, Eagles fans. Let’s get to it.

🌼SPRING GARDENING IN THE MIDWEST

Gardening in the Midwest presents unique challenges due to unpredictable spring weather, late frosts, and heavy rains. However, with proper planning and preparation, you can have a productive and thriving garden.

  1. Know Your Frost Dates

The Midwest has a variable climate, with the last frost typically occurring between mid-April and early May, depending on your location. Check your local frost dates and avoid planting tender crops too early. Keep row covers or cold frames handy for unexpected temperature drops.

  2. Prepare the Soil Early

Midwestern winters can leave soil compacted and nutrient-depleted. As soon as the ground is workable (not too wet or frozen), loosen the soil with a garden fork or tiller. Add compost, aged manure, or organic matter to replenish nutrients and improve drainage. Raised beds can help prevent soil compaction from spring rains.

  3. Choose Hardy Crops for Early Planting

Cool-season vegetables thrive in the Midwest’s early spring. Start crops like spinach, lettuce, kale, radishes, and peas as soon as the soil can be worked. Root crops like carrots and beets can also be sown early. Warm-season plants such as tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers should wait until after the last frost.

  4. Start Seeds Indoors for a Head Start

Due to the Midwest’s shorter growing season, start seeds for tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost. Use grow lights or a sunny window to ensure strong seedling growth. Harden off seedlings by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions before transplanting.

  5. Mulch and Water Wisely

Spring rains can be heavy, but once they taper off, moisture retention is key. Apply mulch around plants to suppress weeds, regulate soil temperature, and retain moisture. Water deeply but infrequently to encourage deep root growth, avoiding overhead watering to prevent fungal diseases.

  6. Watch for Pests and Disease

Early spring brings common Midwest garden pests like aphids, flea beetles, and slugs. Use floating row covers for young plants and apply organic pest controls such as neem oil or diatomaceous earth. Proper spacing and air circulation help prevent fungal diseases caused by damp conditions.

By planning around the Midwest’s climate challenges and using smart planting techniques, you can enjoy a successful and bountiful garden throughout the season.
