Good morning, Princeton. Thanksgiving is an incredible day, with the average meal packing a whopping 2,500–3,000 calories—roughly the same as devouring up to eight Big Macs. While Americans spend an extra 21 minutes eating on Thanksgiving compared to other days, the prep and cleanup time far surpasses that, making it a true labor of love. The holiday’s staples, like turkey (46 million birds consumed annually), mashed potatoes, and roasted potatoes, come at a cost—$64.05 for a dinner serving ten—and a price to the planet, with 316 million pounds of food wasted. Despite the effort, expectations remain high, as 70% of people still look forward to turkey gracing their plates.
Here we go.

🧑🚒10 HOLIDAY SAFETY TIPS FROM THE ILLINOIS FIRE MARSHALL
1. Inspect electrical decorations for damage before use.
Cracked or damaged sockets, loose or bare wires, and loose connections may cause a serious shock or start a fire.
2. Do not overload electrical outlets.
Overloaded electrical outlets and faulty wires are a common cause of holiday fires. Avoid overloading outlets and plug only one high-wattage appliance into each outlet at a time.
3. Never connect more than three strings of incandescent lights.
More than three strands may not only blow a fuse, but can also cause a fire.
4. Keep tree fresh by watering daily.
Dry trees are a serious fire hazard.
5. Use battery-operated candles.
Candles start almost half of home decoration fires (NFPA).
6. Keep combustibles at least three feet from heat sources.
A heat source that was too close to the decoration was a factor in half of home fires that began with decorations (NFPA).
7. Protect cords from damage.
To avoid shock or fire hazards, cords should never be pinched by furniture, forced into small spaces such as doors or windows, placed under rugs, located near heat sources, or attached by nails or staples.
8. Check decorations for certification label.
Decorations not bearing a label from an independent testing laboratory such as Underwriters Laboratories (UL), Canadian Standards Association (CSA), or Intertek (ETL) have not been tested for safety and could be hazardous.
9. Stay in the kitchen when something is cooking.
Unattended cooking equipment is the leading cause of home cooking fires (NFPA).
10. Turn off, unplug, and extinguish all decorations when going to sleep or leaving the house.
Unattended candles are the cause of one in five home candle fires. Half of home fire deaths occur between the hours of 11:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. (NFPA).

Blue Christmas Event in Sheffield
Sometimes “Merry Christmas” is just not so merry.
You or someone you know may struggle with finding joy this Christmas, because of a recent change or loss due to death, divorce, sickness, or unfortunate and tragic circumstances. The constant refrain on the radio and television, in the shopping malls and churches, about the happiness of the season, about getting together with family and friends, reminds many people of what they have lost. The anguish of broken relationships, the insecurity of unemployment, the weariness of ill health, the pain of isolation - all of these can make us feel very empty in the midst of celebrating and spending. Adding to this blue mood is the darkest day of the year, the winter solstice, which falls on December 21st of 2024.
The Cornerstone Community Wellness Center in Sheffield is offering a Blue Christmas Candlelight Community Service on December 6th, 2024 at 6:30 pm. All are welcome and encouraged to bring a friend.
Come experience a simple time of music, readings, and reflection that acknowledge Emmanuel, God with us, in the midst of hard times. You might be surprised by how many people need this kind of service during the season of Christmas.
The short service will be followed by a brief time of light refreshments and fellowship.
🏀BUREAU VALLEY VS PRINCETON HIGH SCHOOL ALUMNI BASKETBALL GAME

The first quarter will showcase alumni aged 40 and older, while the second quarter will feature the women’s alumni team. In the third quarter, alumni aged 21 and older will play, and the fourth quarter will be open to any alumni able to continue. Additional fun activities include a free throw contest at the end of the first quarter, and a three-point contest at the end of the third quarter.
At halftime, alumni cheer and dance teams will perform school songs, bringing spirit to the event. The game aims to celebrate the 29-year rivalry between Bureau Valley and Princeton, marking a historic event for the alumni and community. Following the game, a post-game party will take place from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Rossy’s in Wyanet.
All proceeds from admission, raffle, and merchandise sales will support the Bureau Valley and Princeton Sports Boosters.
