Some Illinois History

Abraham Lincoln's association with Illinois is a crucial aspect of his life and political career. Here's a brief history of Lincoln in Illinois:

  1. Early Years in Illinois: Abraham Lincoln moved to Illinois from Indiana in 1830 with his family. They settled in the town of New Salem. Lincoln worked various jobs, including as a store clerk and postmaster, gaining a reputation for his honesty and intelligence.

  2. Military Service: During the Black Hawk War in 1832, Lincoln served as a captain in the Illinois militia. Although he saw little combat, this experience marked his first taste of public service and leadership.

  3. Entry into Politics: Lincoln began his political career in Illinois, winning a seat in the Illinois State Legislature in 1834. His political acumen and speaking abilities quickly gained attention.

  4. Law Career: Lincoln studied law and became a self-taught lawyer. He practiced law in Springfield, Illinois, earning a reputation for his integrity and effectiveness as an attorney.

  5. Marriage and Family: In 1842, Lincoln married Mary Todd in Springfield. The couple had four sons, and their home in Springfield became a center for political and social gatherings.

  6. Political Ascent: Lincoln continued his political rise, serving in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1847 to 1849. Though his term was relatively unremarkable, he returned to Illinois and focused on his legal practice.

  7. Lincoln-Douglas Debates (1858): One of the pivotal moments in Lincoln's political career occurred during the Lincoln-Douglas debates. In 1858, he engaged in a series of debates with Senator Stephen A. Douglas during the Illinois Senate race. These debates elevated Lincoln's national profile and set the stage for his future political endeavors.

  8. Election as President (1860): In 1860, Lincoln won the Republican nomination for president and went on to secure victory in the general election. His election prompted Southern states to secede, leading to the onset of the Civil War.

  9. Civil War Years: Throughout the Civil War, Lincoln maintained strong ties to Illinois. The state contributed significantly to the Union war effort, providing troops and resources. Lincoln's leadership during this tumultuous time solidified his legacy as one of the nation's greatest presidents.

  10. Assassination and Legacy: On April 14, 1865, Lincoln was assassinated at Ford's Theatre in Washington, D.C. His body was returned to Springfield, Illinois, where he was laid to rest in Oak Ridge Cemetery. Lincoln's legacy endures, and his time in Illinois played a crucial role in shaping the man who would become the 16th President of the United States.
