In the words of the show’s creators, “[title of show] is an original musical that chronicles its own journey from inception to opening night on Broadway. But at its heart, this show is about four friends. It's about how friendships are tested and changed when life happens, when new opportunities are revealed. It's about not being afraid to dream out loud and killing Vampires. It's about risk and learning to be true to yourself and to your friends...your chosen family. And it's about ninety minutes too.”

Come see Festival 56 alums, Joey Banks, Ryan Reid, Sarah Smith, and Emily Christine Smith (along with the amazing Emily Turtle on the keys), bring this heart warming and hilarious show to life.

Directed by Tim Seib and music directed by Emily Turtle.

📚FROM THE BUREAU COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY

📸Bureau County Historical Society

Francis M. Herrick was born February 1, 1839 in Old Town, Maine, one of 10 children. When he was 10 years old, he traveled to Princeton with his parents and settled on a farm just outside of town.

When he was 22 years old, Herrick enlisted to fight in the Civil War in 1861 with the 9th Illinois Cavalry, Co. K.

At the Battle of Cotton Plant in northeast Arkansas in July 1862, Herrick, among 10,000 other Union soldiers, encountered a 5,000-man Confederate force.

The Union Army of the Southwest engaged 600 plus men against approximately 2,000 men of 12th and 16th Texas cavalry and drove them off.

In the course of the battle, Herrick was shot in the left lung, and survived. He lived the rest of his life with the effects of his wound, for which he received a Purple Heart.

He would spend the rest of his time in the war in hospital and received an honorable discharge in 1863. When he left the war and returned home, he married Lucy Ann Lloyd, 18, of LaMoille.

Lucy's father, Capt. David Lloyd, 52, of the 93rd IL. Vol. Inf., Co. K, was killed in battle at Champion Hill, Mississippi, May 16, 1863. Her brother, George, just 16 years old, was with their father when he fell and sat beside his dead body on the battlefield through the night. George and another brother, James, served throughout the war and returned home. Lloyd is buried in the National Cemetery at Vicksburg, Mississippi.

Lucy and Francis must have known one another before he enlisted, as her father wrote her a letter while he was enroute to Vicksburg on a steamboat, encouraging her to support her love in his endeavors. This brief and precious letter is in the collection of the Bureau County History Center.

Lucy and Francis would share 59 years of marriage together and five children. Francis went on to teach in one-room schoolhouses outside of Princeton. He authored a book on geometry and several poems. He was an early member and organizer of the Grand Army of the Republic and proudly attended every reunion of the Bureau County Soldiers' and Sailors' Association.

Lucy died at 78 in 1922, while Francis would live to be 96 years of age, dying at the home of his daughter in Princeton in 1935.

His poem, "The American Flag" was written shortly after the Civil War.

High in the western skies,
Our starry flag still flies,
O'er freedom's host.
On every swelling breeze,
O'er plain and leafy trees,
On land and foreign seas,
'Tis freedom's boast!

May freemen firmly stand
By thee, on sea and land,
Forever true,
As 'mid the battle's roar,
SOur valiant heroes bore,
On home and foreign shore,
Thy crimsoned blue!

May all thy glories shine;
May every star be thine,
Till time shall cease!
May freedom guard thee long,
With love supreme and strong,
And loud resound the song
Of joy and peace!

Let thy defenders be
The guests of Liberty ---
Land of the brave;
Where'er thy folds shall fly,
The sign of triumph high,
Great God, our King, be nigh,
Our land to save!

🧩LETTER FROM LORI

For 20 years, I did daycare. My mother and I owned a center for 5 years, then I continued daycare from my home. I have always encouraged creativity. I grew up in a time when we would burst forth into the outdoors as soon as we finished our cereal and put on our grubby clothes. We wandered, explored, and used our imaginations. Sticks became swords, low branches became ponies, and at the beach, we 'fed' the waves with handfuls of sand, encouraging them to grow and get bigger so we could jump over them like dolphins. We had no limits.

One of my greatest delights in doing daycare was eavesdropping on the kids and their creative banter with one another, or even alone. Currently, I am blessed to have my grandchildren on a weekly basis, allowing me to relive those precious times.

I have a giant tote filled with various building toys, from Duplos to tubes and lock-together shapes. My 3-year-old grandson will spend hours building and creating towers, swords, and structures with no specific meaning. I find that his one-year-old sister doesn't have the coordination or experience to bring to life his more complex and intricate visions. Her creations are more simplistic and awkward, but in my eyes, just as beautiful.

When I join them, I tend to let my OCD nature guide the building of my imaginative visions. I pay more attention to patterns, colors, and think ahead to my finished product. We all choose from the same bin and have the same options, but our finished products are completely different. Addy's creations reflect her age and experience. Hayden has worked with the materials enough to know what fits together and what doesn't. I, who started out with Lincoln Logs back in pioneer times, building ranches to house my extensive collection of Breyer horses, have much more wisdom and knowledge about combining many aspects of materials and direction for a beautifully finished product.

So it is with life. We are given a giant box of pieces and parts. Some of us dig to the bottom with much effort to find hidden gems that aren't lying on top. We might even have to laboriously climb into the box, enduring the sharp sting of stepping on a Lego as we search for the holy grail. Some are content to pull up a stool and choose from the most available pieces, sitting right on top, easily accessed and requiring little effort. Some will choose vibrant colors and build until their tower meets the sky, only to have it come crashing down, forcing them to start from scratch and evaluate the mistakes that were made so their new efforts will be more successful.

The stool sitter is happy with his 4-piece structure and has no regrets, feeling he has done enough and moving on to naps and eating. He is far less stressed than the frantic engineer who is now sweaty and frustrated. Both have the same beginning but a much different ending. So today (and every day), we have a choice to use the box according to our personalities, desires, and ambition. So how will you create today? Most days, I'm a Pollock artist, but today, I may just link together some random pieces, grab a cinnamon roll, and take a nap.
