Good Wednesday morning, neighbors. I’ll say it: Tootsie Rolls are the GOAT (Greatest of All Time) of parade candies. You’ll probably see me eating them while I rep Princeton Christian Academy on Saturday, just a couple floats behind my favorite GOAT: Andy Linder, World Record Hacky-Sackm’n. It has been my tradition to start a “Hacky Sack” chant in my section when he goes by. It would be amazing if we all did that together. He’s super cool.

Hacky Sack! Hacky Sack! Hacky Sack! Let’s do this.

💡WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

  • Happy Birthday, Andy Schmeck 🎈

  • I need to correct a time from my last newsletter: The Covered Bridge Quilters Guild and Bureau County History Center will host Velma Gladney, a storyteller of the Underground Railroad, on Thursday, September 5th at 5:00 PM. The event will take place at the Sash Stalter Matson Building, located at 15 Park Avenue West (upper level via Pleasant St. Entrance). Gladney will share stories about the secret operations of the Underground Railroad and showcase quilts with hidden codes used by African Americans. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased from the Guild, BCHC Office, or at the door. Sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused.

  • Princeton resident Ron Imsland, commenting on Aldi and Starbucks coming to town: “At the council meeting [last night], it sounded like the project is nearly finalized. The project manager…gave a brief speech, stating that he has been working on it for a year and a half. He mentioned that the developers are fully onboard, and that ‘Starbucks, I think, wants to break ground this fall, while Aldi will probably wait until spring,’ pending proper permits and other finalizations. The subdivision was approved, and the mayor added that no special fiscal benefits were offered to either business, as the city aims to ensure that all related businesses are on an equal playing field.”

  • The Princeton Tigresses Volleyball team achieved a program sweep in their match against Newman, with the Freshmen winning 25-18, 25-8, Sophomores winning 21-25, 25-16, 25-21, and Varsity winning 25-13, 25-15. Their next game is a conference match against Kewanee on Thursday, with start times at 5:00 PM, 5:00 PM, and 6:00 PM. The team is looking forward to continuing their strong performance on the road.

  •  Zearing Park's walking path will be closed all day on Monday, September 9th, for maintenance and repairs. Your cooperation in staying off the path during this time is appreciated to ensure the work is completed promptly.

They can be purchased online or at various local locations, including City Hall, Princeton Area Chamber of Commerce, several local banks, salons, and golf courses.

  • After a dominant win over Sterling Newman Central Catholic, Princeton High School football will head to Rockridge this Friday, with the game beginning at 7:00 PM. PHS football (1-0) has moved up to the 61st spot in the Illinois rankings. The Rockridge Rockets tallied 42 points while holding the host Sherrard Tigers to just 6. With this win, the Rockets are 1-0 record, ranked 169th in the State of Illinois.

🌽HARVEST SAFETY

As harvest season approaches, farmers throughout Illinois are preparing their equipment for the demanding days ahead. With more slow-moving agricultural machinery expected on rural roads and highways, the Illinois State Police are urging motorists to remain cautious while driving. It's essential for drivers to stay attentive and be ready to decrease speed when encountering farm vehicles, which operate at much slower speeds than regular traffic. To minimize the risk of accidents, avoiding distractions such as texting or using hand-held phones is crucial. Additionally, motorists should carefully watch for turn signals on farm equipment and maintain a safe following distance to prevent collisions.

During harvest, patience is a critical component of road safety. Farmers often need to transport equipment between fields, sometimes using public roadways. Due to their size and limited maneuverability, farm vehicles may struggle to pull over or accelerate quickly. Drivers should exercise patience, recognizing that harvest is a brief yet vital period for the agricultural community. Respecting the space and speed of farm equipment enhances safety for all road users. Moreover, farm machinery might require extra room to make wide turns or cross the centerline to navigate narrow roads or avoid roadside obstacles. Being prepared for these movements helps prevent sudden braking or swerving, thereby reducing accident risks.

Farmers are encouraged to take additional measures to ensure safety during this busy season. It is advisable to avoid moving farm machinery during periods of low visibility, such as early morning or late evening, to reduce the risk of accidents related to limited sightlines. Displaying slow-moving vehicle emblems prominently on the rear of farm equipment is also essential to alert drivers to the presence of slower traffic. By adhering to these safety practices, both farmers and motorists can work together to make the harvest season safer and more efficient, minimizing the potential for accidents and ensuring that everyone remains safe on the road.
