📍OUTSIDE CITY LIMITS

Sisler’s Ice in Ohio, IL

From Starved Rock Media: A family-owned Bureau County company that's been many persons choice for ice cream and ice for over a century has been sold.

A Facebook post went up Monday announcing the sale of Sisler's Ice in Ohio to Home City Ice. Sisler's started in 1908, producing ice, ice cream, and butter. They ceased the production of ice cream in January of 2022 although you can still get half gallons, pints and dipping cones at Sisler's Ice Cream in Princeton.

With Sisler leadership looking to retire coupled with ongoing challenges like increased utility costs, government regulations, and labor shortages, they started meeting with potential buyers. That buyer was found late last year in Home City Ice which has been around since 1893.

For now, the company formerly known as Sisler's will keep the same number and production will continue out of Ohio. Ownership says many Sisler's employees will stay on with the new owners.

A Sisler's Ice in DeKalb is not part of the sale.

The Witness Tree in Mineral, IL

WLPO: A landmark tree that's been around for 250 years in Bureau County has reached the end.

Folks with Taylor's Tree Service on Friday took the “Witness Tree” down along County Road 10 in Mineral, just north of Interstate 80. Prior to it being taken down, the Bureau County Soil & Water Conservation District said the historic tree had been losing its large limbs and that recently, developed a fungus or mold that was spreading throughout the tree. It became mostly hollow.

The 250-year-old bur oak measured 14 feet in circumference with a branch spread of over 80 feet. Acorns were so large that only one can fit in the palm of a hand. The story goes that Chief Shabbona held council at the tree with members of the Fox and Sauk tribes. The tree stood at what's known as the Old Indian Trail.
