🔥Smoked Ribs, Pie Eating Contest, and Storms
Happy Saturday morning, Princeton. This week’s issue...

Happy Saturday morning, Princeton. Okay, I didn’t eat all these ribs from Niel and Shorty’s in that pan, but I ate many of them. I can confidently say Niel and Shorty’s serve the best smoked ribs around — maybe in the world. Shoutout to Matt Eggers and the rest of the guys from church who ate them with me.
Let’s go.

🏊🏻POOL SAFETY
Regional Media News: The Illinois State Fire Marshal highlights an alarming trend: more than 4,500 drownings occur each year nationwide, with residential pools posing the greatest risk. The majority of these tragedies involve young children and take place at home rather than in public facilities. Authorities are urging families to enforce vigilant adult supervision at all times when children are near water and to install secure fencing around pools to create a physical barrier. Additionally, experts recommend storing pool chemicals safely and following usage instructions closely to prevent toxic exposure and accidental injuries. Community members are reminded that simple precautions can save lives. Take the Pool Safety Pledge by visiting: www.poolsafety.gov/pledge.
“Pools have been a popular way to cool off this summer, but we can’t afford to get complacent — drownings can happen in an instant and often without a sound. It’s not like the movies,” said Illinois State Fire Marshal Michele Pankow. “If children are in or around the pool, stay off your phone, put down your book, and keep your eyes on them at all times. Staying cool at the pool is fun — but it comes with serious responsibility.”
🌠JOIN THE “THANK YOU” CARD DRIVE
State Representative Travis Weaver’s office is organizing a “Thank You Card Drive” for deployed military personnel, running from June 10th to August 1st. Community members are invited to express their gratitude and support by submitting handwritten cards. Cards can be mailed or delivered directly to 337 Court Street in Pekin, Illinois 61554. Every card collected during this drive will be sent to soldiers currently deployed overseas. Representative Weaver’s initiative aims to boost morale and remind service members that their dedication is appreciated back home. Donations of cards are being accepted now through August 1, 2025.

🌩️LETTER FROM LORI
As I sit here listening to the thunder rumble and watching the sky light up, I’m once again reminded of perspective. I tend to enjoy God’s fireworks and concert. I can sit, sipping my drink, and revel in the glorious show only He can provide.
Others panic and run for cover. They anticipate swirling livestock and doom. In the past, they may have been the victim of a fallen tree. They may have deep empathy for the families in Texas who are facing devastating loss due to storms. They may have watched as lightning struck and started a fire. There is a very real reason for their reaction.
I, honestly, have no rational reason why I like storms. I’ll admit, high winds put me on edge. I watched that cheesy video in sixth grade where an innocent youth was frolicking with her adorable puppy in an open pasture as a swirling mass of dust and debris approached from the horizon. We knew to be scared because of the ominous music. Apparently, Pollyanna was deaf, because she didn’t know to be afraid, and continued to joyfully dance with her canine companion until her hysterical mother came barreling from the farmhouse, tackled her like Sweetness in the backfield, and launched her safely into a ditch—thus saving her life (and Fido’s too). That traumatic piece of cinema is etched deeply into my psyche.
Later in life, I was minding my own business in my living room when high winds parted a tree from its trunk. It landed squarely on my back patio and came to rest against the house, ejecting all the décor on my kitchen wall onto the floor.
So, why am I not afraid of storms? By all rights, I should be. But it’s about perspective. Watching that film made me aware of tornado safety and gave me hope that even the most simple-minded child and her silly puppy could escape imminent demise. When the tree fell on my house, I had exactly $1.37 in my bank account. I didn’t know how I was going to pay bills that month or feed my children. The tree fell on a Sunday. The insurance adjuster came on Tuesday. I had a check for over $10,000 by Thursday. No windows were broken. No major damage was done. The replacement-cost rider on my policy paid for things I wasn’t even required to replace.
That tree was a blessing—because I saw it as such.
Even in some of the most devastating storms in our lives, we can always find a bright side. You may have to wipe some dirt from your eyes, wring out your soggy shirt, and dodge a flying cow, but I promise you, it’s there. Focus on finding it instead of crying because your roof is leaking…
…as I just discovered that mine is.
Drip.
Drip.
Drip.
Goodnight.
