Happy Presidents Day, Princeton. Did you know George Washington...

SPONSORED BY

Happy Presidents Day, Princeton. Did you know George Washington refused a salary as president, only accepting Congress’ mandated $25,000 per year — equivalent to about $800,000 today? Abraham Lincoln remains the only U.S. president to hold a patent, designing a device to lift boats over sandbars, though it was never produced. Teddy Roosevelt was shot during a campaign speech in 1912 but still spoke for over an hour before seeking medical help. Meanwhile, Calvin Coolidge had a pet raccoon named Rebecca, originally meant for Thanksgiving dinner, but his family adopted her instead, letting her roam the White House.

We have the coolest Presidents.

šŸ¦ŽSMALL BUSINESS VS. BIG BOX...

In speaking with a customer this weekend, I found out that they had obtained a baby reptile from a big box store for a price lower than what was available to me from my supplier.

When you purchase animals like this from Petsmart or another chain store, what you may not realize is that it is similar to purchasing from Puppy Mills—only the reptile, avian, or rodent equivalent. When someone mentions the term "puppy mill," activists come out of the woodwork with pitchforks and torches. Why would you react differently for other categories of animals?

True, you may pay less initially, but there are several factors that may cost you more in the end. I also see this with people who purchase online. The initial price may be less, but shipping is rarely less than $50, and can exceed $100...no matter the value of the animal. Sometimes there is little information about the individual animal purchased because they are plucked from bins. Next, you need to factor in the stress of shipping and how that affects the overall health of the animal. Some can be quite delicate, and stress could jeopardize their lives. Often, they arrive dehydrated or young enough that they may not be well established.

In the 7 years I have owned Boek-el-ZOO, I have made countless connections with trusted local breeders in all areas of the store. I have selective breeding programs in place for several varieties I carry. I prefer this method because then my babies are handled and socialized from the earliest age that is feasible. When it is not possible to draw stock from those sources, I do my best to hand-pick from vendors I know at Expos and shows. As a last resort, I will mail order for the harder-to-find prospects, but upon arrival, I do a thorough check and have a trusted hobbyist inspect the new arrival if it is out of my scope of knowledge.

When I take in trades and barter for stock, I do my best to ensure they come from trusted sources. On occasion, I will take in an ailing animal to ensure it receives the best care, but I won't release it for sale until it has fully recovered, and I will be 100% honest with any prospective buyer about the circumstances surrounding it. I am dedicated to finding appropriate new 'parents' for everything in the store.

So, the next time you think you are saving money or 'rescuing' a critter from a big box environment, consider the big picture of your actions, and consider quality over lower prices, and exactly what you may be supporting in the long run.

šŸ”„HEATING YOUR HOME SAFELY

Did you know?

šŸ Home fires occur more in the winter months than any other time of the year. Follow these heating tips to help prevent winter fires and stay safe this winter season:Keep flammable materials at least 3 feet away from all heat sources such as fireplaces, wood stoves, radiators, space heaters, and candles.

  • Never use an oven to heat your home. This can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning and pose a fire hazard.

  • Turn off space heaters before leaving a room or going to bed. Never leave them unattended.

  • Have your heating equipment and chimneys professionally inspected and cleaned annually. Regular maintenance can prevent dangerous build-ups that can cause fires.

  • Use only approved and properly rated space heaters. Ensure they have an automatic shut-off feature in case they tip over.

  • Keep a fire extinguisher nearby when using fireplaces, space heaters, or wood stoves. Be prepared to act quickly in case of a fire.

  • Test smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors monthly. Make sure they are working and replace the batteries regularly.

  • Use a sturdy screen in front of fireplaces. This prevents sparks from escaping and igniting nearby objects.

  • Never overload electrical outlets. Plug space heaters directly into wall outlets rather than power strips to prevent overheating.

  • Use proper fuel for wood stoves and fireplaces. Avoid burning wet or unseasoned wood, which can lead to creosote buildup and chimney fires.

  • Develop and practice a fire escape plan. Ensure everyone in your household knows two ways out of every room in case of an emergency.
