📚FROM THE BUREAU COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY

📸Bureau County Historical Society

Have you been by to see our 1912 exhibit in the Newell-Bryant Museum? We couldn’t let July pass by without sharing these fascinating shots and the riveting newspaper coverage of the aerial meet that took place at the Bureau County Fairgrounds, earlier this month, 112 years ago.

The meet was held from July 1 to July 4, 1912 and featured pilots J. Hector Warden flying the Moisant airship, the most famous “ship” of Europe, and George W. Beatty, flying the Wright Bros. machine.

Thousands of people poured into Princeton over the three days via various modes of transportation, especially the train. It was estimated 20,000 people filled Princeton just on July 4, 1912 to see the aviators take to the sky.

The Bureau County Tribune covered the event extensively in multiple articles.

The article titled “Aviation Meet Attracts Large Crowd Thursday,” published July 12, 1912, stated, “The meet of last week gave the people of this vicinity a chance to compare two of the best known makes of machines, the Wright biplane and the Moisant monoplane, the most famous foreign machine. The Wright was an easy favorite with the crowd, because of the fact that it seemed the safest and most practical. The weather conditions have very little effect on this type of machine, while with the Moisant, it is necessary to have everything favorable, so far as the wind is concerned, before the flyer feels like attempting to go up. The Moisant is a much faster machine, and surely looks inviting and safe enough when it gets to sailing around in the clouds. There is no way of regulating the speed of this machine and when the aviator leaves the ground, he has got to travel at the rate of sixty miles per hour unless the wind is so strong that it holds the machine back."

The article went on to say, “The meet last week, taking everything into consideration, was a very successful one. In the first place it was a tremendous undertaking for a city the size of Princeton, but the mere fact that it was held without anyone being killed or even injured, is remarkable. Eleven aviators were killed last week, while the Princeton meet was being held, and neither of the aviators here got a scratch.”

We invite you to stop by and visit the 1912 exhibit to learn about this event and many, many more that happened in Bureau County, and around the world in 1912, the year the most famous ocean liner went down.
